About PHC
A legacy of Passion, Family and Excellence.
Paarl has a rich hockey history dating back to the 1920’s, with the first official club, the Paarl Men’s Hockey Club, founded around 1950. These founding members were all alumni from Paarl Boys High and Paarl Gymnasium with the majority coming from the latter.
Back then with no schoolboy hockey the 3rd and 4th team was mainly made up of scholars, creating the foundation of the club’s strong family-oriented culture.
A ladies club was soon after established and although the men competed in the Western Province league, the ladies club joined the former Boland league.
Paarl hockey quickly became a powerhouse in both provinces, especially the men’s club. Winning the WP first division 14 out of 16 years from the late 60’s until the 1980’s and regularly fielding several South African players during this era.
In 2012 the men’s and the women’s teams merged to form the unified Paarl Hockey Club, and since then the club has only grown stronger. In 2021 the ladies made their debut in the WP top league, and in 2025 the men’s team will be back in the top tier of WP for the first time in more than 20 years. In 2021, PHC also made history by winning their debut u/13 league season and then in 2023 a new first was the addition of our first o/35’s Master’s team.
At PHC, we welcome players of all ages, from primary school to Masters, and offer a place for everyone to play grow and belong.
